About Pet Insurance

Did you know 1 in 3 pets may require unexpected veterinary treatment each year?* Whilst advances in veterinary medicine mean we can do more for your pet, treatment costs can soon mount up. We recommend Petplan insurance to all our clients to help cover unexpected vets bills.

You may be surprised to hear that you are more likely to claim on your pet insurance than your car or household policies (Allianz Insurance plc). In fact, in our experience if you are one of the few people who don't need to claim on your pet insurance you really are very lucky indeed!

It's important to be aware that not all pet insurance is the same. Some policies limit the amount of time or money that you can claim for. Don't just shop around on price alone.

At Shamrock Veterinary Centre we recommend Petplan insurance for the following reasons:

  • With Petplan's Covered for Life guarantee your veterinary fees cover is renewed each year no matter how much you claim.
  • Petplan doesn't place exclusions at renewal on their Covered for Life policy so on-going conditions such as eczema continue to be covered by the policy.
  • Petplan won't increase your premium or excess just because you make a claim.
  • Petplan is a pet insurance specialist so they understand the animal market and work closely with vets, charities and breeders.

As per our Terms and Conditions of business, we require payment for all Veterinary Services at the time of treatment. This applies equally to Insured and Non-insured clients. Insured clients can claim payments back from their Insurance Company. We only make direct claims from the Insurance Company in exceptional circumstances.

How to make a claim
1, Obtain a Claim form (s) from the insurance company. Most forms only allow claims for up to two conditions, so if you claiming for a number of conditions you may require more than one form.
For PET PLAN we keep claims forms as well as e-claims forms here at Shamrock. E-claims are generally processed more quickly.
2, Complete all the policyholder sections of the claim form, sign and date appropriately. Please note that we can only complete the Veterinary Section and are not allowed to complete the policyholders sections. Please also complete our Insurance Claim checklist (ask for one at reception) and leave your Claim form and checklist for completion of your claim. You do not need to retain or provide invoices as we will reprint these from our records. The only exception to this is if you have invoices from Harcourt-Browns who share our Out Of Hours work.

To minimize the administration burden and continue to provide the service free of charge we ask clients to consider the following.
1, Please leave your claim until the completion of treatment if possible.
2, For repeat claims for an ongoing condition, every 6 months is reasonable.
3, Please ensure that you have completed your claim form accurately.

Electronic insurance claims (e-claims)

For Pet Plan only we can now process your insurance claim electronically. This will mean that the claim is processed more quickly. Please ask at reception for an e claim form.
It is always helpful to us if, once you have used E-claims you continue to use them as the system then keeps a record of items claimed for.
It is not possible to use an e- claim if part of the claim is for invoices from another vet (such as the one we share out- of-hours rota) or therapist.
If you wish, claims can be paid direct to your bank. This avoids a cheque having to be sent in the post.
